JACKSON – Several local firefighters teamed up to save a missing horse that was stuck in mud deep in the woods.

The horse had been missing from a farm in Millstone township since Friday afternoon and was discovered by a hunter in the woods of Jackson.

After emergency crews arrived on the scene, they determined that due to the terrain and the deep mud they could not use heavy equipment to assist with the rescue.

Volunteers from the Millstone Township Fire Department and the Cassville Fire Department as well as the horse owners, horse trainers, a veterinarian and good Samaritans used shovels, axes, straps and a grip hoist to get the horse out of the mud.

Millstone Township Uniformed Firefighters wrote on their Facebook page that they were able to create a stable path for the horse by using heavy rubber mats, to prevent the horse from sinking again.

“Thanks to great teamwork the horse was brought to safety and transported for further care. Local 4388 members are always happy to work with our neighboring agencies,” Millstone Township Uniformed Firefighters said.
